Straight from the vaults. Kobe studied Elgin's rocker step. Erving, Barry, Hawkins, Thompson, Monroe, and a slew of other greats all were inspired by style and moves they saw Elgin do. In turn the generations that followed adopted those same moves on down the line to the modern game. I spent 4 or 5 years collecting enough film to make this. The past year I decided I should put it together so people could see one of the most important contributors to the modern game.

Dude lost all 8 NBA finals he played:damn:
He retired just 9 games into the 1971-72 season:flabbynsick:
Then the Lakers went on an NBA record 33-game winning streak :ohhh:
and won the title without him:mjcry:
It's brutal how it all panned out but I give him a pass for averaging 40.6 points and *17 boards in a 7 game series and dropping 61 with 22 boards in G5 of the NBA Finals of 1962. Left nothing on the court. If you're playing the last game of the year 8 out of your 11 seasons (he wasn't healthy and/or retired at playoff time during 3 of his 14 seasons) you're doing a lot of things right to even be getting there in the first place. Holding the Finals record for points during your prime is I guess a bittersweet record without a ring from it but still.

He was rewarded later by becoming the Clippers GM (in their awful years) and Donald Sterling's whipping boy:why:

Great video. Elgin Baylor was the man. Too bad his knees went bad early in his career (he might have had more near 40 point, 20 rebound years). By the end of Elgin's career, his knees were completely shot and he still had a near 28 point, 14 rebound career average. I think he could have almost averaged 30 points and 17 rebound a game for his career if he never got hurt. Well, Elgin could pass, rebound better than centers, push the ball coast-to-coast like point guards and invent shots on the fly. It's no wonder Dr. J said Elgin was his favorite player to watch and had a greater array of shots in his arsenal than anybody else.

Him Jerry Dream Oscar and Erving make up my next 5 after my top ten of MJ CAP Bill Bron Wilt Magic Duncan Bird Shaq and Kobe. With some of these guys taking top 10 and 15 spots guys like Elgin are being pushed to the back and not getting the praise that they once got 20 or 30 years ago. But clearly you can see his influence of the modern player cause he used a lot of movement and had decent hangtime (especially for those days) in the air.
