Author and Democratic presidential hopeful Marianne Williamson said in an interview Thursday she is running for the White House because America needs a "moral and spiritual awakening."

"We need a moral and spiritual awakening in the country," Williamson, who launched her campaign Monday in Los Angeles, said on CNN’s "New Day.""Nothing short of that is adequate to fundamentally change the patterns of our political dysfunction."

Williamson is a best-selling author and spiritual counselor to Oprah Winfrey. She said in the interview Thursday that her career has prepared her to tackle the country’s “deeper levels of moral dysfunction.”

"I have had a 35-year career in naming and transforming those dynamics,” she said. “That's my qualification for the presidency.”

Williamson’s platform includes a Green New Deal, universal background checks for gun owners and free college or technical school, according to her campaign website.

In the CNN interview, she also called for reparations for slavery, with $10 billion per year to be distributed over a decade.

"I believe $100 billion given to a council to apply this money to economic projects and educational projects of renewal for that population is a debt to be paid," she said.

Williamson ran for Congress in California in 2014, but placed fourth in the primary.

A researcher at the University of Connecticut recently published a new estimate of the value of U.S. slave labor in the 89 years from the country's founding until the end of the Civil War. Based on the wages paid to laborers in the antebellum period and assuming an average of 12 hours of work a day, seven days a week, the researcher, Thomas Craemer, concluded that U.S. slave labor would be worth roughly $5.9 trillion today.

That debt would amount to $14.2 trillion today. Craemer also notes that racial exploitation and terrorism continued through most of the 20th century, with substantial economic consequences.

As a black man, I'm for reparations and have been very public saying so.

But since you as a white man have already shown yourself to be war hungry, it makes sense that you wouldn't speak up about it.

I've posted about reparations quite a bit actually. I support it even though I wouldn't benefit from it since I'm not #AADOS.

I'm not war hungry in any sense of the term and you've made it abundantly clear you're not opposed to genocide.

I'm one of the only black people on this forum btw

I'm saying that realistically white people are not going to go out of their way to give AAs reparations. The Native Americans had to force the issue. The Japanese-Americans had to force the issue. AAs gonna have to force the issue.

Native Americans and Japanese had no power to force the issue so it was definitely led by white people... .blacks have way more power than both groups at the time and it's disconcerting this hasn't already happened ...regardless , we should cut Jewish reparations which we don't owe and funnel this to African Americans .

I would target only those who have populated a census and declared their race as black and ,/or who can trace lineage back to slavery.
