Before he used Hot Rod as a hostage, Megatron stabbed Optimus Prime in the gut with a piece of shrapnel, then cut him in the gut with a light sabre. In the movie Optimus dominated, but in the TV series they were mostly even.

Even before Megatron grabbed Hot Rod, Optimus started feeling himself. Megatron saw it, and used that Ric Flare old boy flop on Optimus while he was reaching for that gun. Hot Rod came in to save Optimus, because he saw Megatron was about to start bucking. Optimus had tons of time to fire on Megatron and didn't. The second Megatron got his chance he let loose with that gun on Optimus.

It's Megatron. He doesn't fight fair, and if he says he will he's lying. In the end, he won, regardless of what Starscream did afterwards or how beat up he was.
