Above the fray.

But the Academy made a very loud statement, and for me to stay quiet is to accept that statement. So I agreed to speak up, on behalf of Black women whose work has been dismissed in the past, is dismissed now like Alice Diop and Saint Omer, Chinonye Chukwu and Till — and for those who haven’t even stepped on a set yet.

*I like her work, and I'm sure she's speaking from the heart, but these are awards judging art. Inherently subjective. Can't whine when you don't get nominated.

Serious question @get these nets

Do you ever feel like telling people to make their own shyt when they complain about lack of inclusion?

And I ask this broadly, whether it’s women complaining about not being represented in comedy or gays in movies, etc…

Because I do feel like a lot of complaints have merit on some level. But sometimes after a certain point I feel like…stop bytching. Go make your own movie, awards show, podcast, news channel…whatever.

Like how much whining (no matter how valid) is allowed before people have to take things into their own hands?

I’m not trying to diminish anyone’s argument. I’m genuinely curious.

@Remote

I feel the same way about Gina's complaints as I did about Jada's. They are self serving, under the smokescreen of "speaking for a group". Had Gina gotten the nomination, and been the only (Black) woman nominated, doubt she'd care or say anything.

I get that the Oscar stamp opens up a different world* of creative and financing opportunities. It's more than validation, it's career altering. I get that part.

If it's any kind of contest of art, it is by definition subjective. I'm happy to see Black people nominated and win anything. But begging/whining is not it.

I wish I lived in a world where black people cared more about the BET awards and Soul Train awards...

Like of they completely valued them over the VMAs, Grammys etc

I feel like it,

Remix other peoples slogans has the same effect as a counter protest.

Instead of bringing awareness it is diluting the original message. The average person with no boat in the race now see's it as a choice between one or the or the other as opposed to two separate movements to support. Oscar's So Black, now Oscar so Male, Some one will eventually release an Oscar so hetero meme and now its just a bunch of people complaining about the Oscars instead of actual awareness. Woke black folks with septum rings who initially supported Oscars so black will no jump to the next one because they are more about following woke trends than seeing black people progress as a group.

You're really trying to die on the same hill as the woman that made the movie glamourizing the people who sold black folks into slavery as heroes?
