Clay came to Chicago, like so many R&B musicians of his day, from Mississippi in the 1950s. His gospel-tinged singing became a favorite of club audiences in Chicago and around the world.
In a statement posted to his Facebook page, his management company confirmed that he died as a result of a heart attack Friday night.
He was 73.
