NORMAN, Okla. -- R.J. Washington's words were foretelling.

"Everybody's excited [about Blake Bell] but people have to watch out for Trevor [Knight]," the former Oklahoma defensive end said in November. "Don't count him out; he's going to surprise a lot of people."

Eight months later, coach Bob Stoops announced Knight would be Oklahoma's starting quarterback.

The redshirt freshman from San Antonio beat out Bell, a junior, and will face Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 31 in his first collegiate start.

Sophomore Kendal Thompson was also in the competition, but a foot injury during the Sooners' first practice knocked him out of the mix.

As Landry Jones completed his eligibility, many people were ready to simply hand the job to Bell, who already has made a name for himself as the "Belldozer." He has rushed for 24 touchdowns during his first two seasons at OU.

The Sooners' coaching staff evidently had other ideas. Stoops was unwavering in his insistence throughout the offseason that the job was wide open. Knight swooped in to win the job with a strong preseason camp.

After a decent spring showing, Knight headed into the summer unsatisfied. He knew he could do more. Heading into the final weeks of the quarterback competition, Knight had a clear idea of what he wanted to show Stoops and offensive coordinator Josh Heupel during camp.

"I can go out and play and not be all timid," Knight said when asked what OU's coaching staff could learn about him that they didn't already know. "I was a little tentative during the spring, just getting into it, learning a bit. I just need to go out, have fun and play."

It is somewhat of a surprise to see Knight named the starter, but the buzz about his unique ability began shortly after he arrived on campus in summer 2012 and began terrorizing the Sooners' scout team defense during his redshirt season last fall.

All-Big 12 cornerback Aaron Colvin, Washington and several other Sooners defenders had uncommon praise for Knight as he consistently punished OU's defense during game-week preparations in 2012.

"He gives us challenges each week," Colvin said at the time. "I'm excited to see what Trevor does in the future."

The future is now.

Robert Smith of ESPN said this last week.

He said Trevor Knight looked really good and he wouldnt be shocked if he got the nod.

To my eyes from watching the spring game he looked pretty good....moreso like a prototypical QB than Bell, and he's pretty quick too. I think that may be actually why he won. He's faster than Bell and that will help if we run the offense we ran in the Spring game.....which I HOPE we do.

I think we're kinda weak at RB even tho we rotate two guys, so the Belldozer formation will still be used alot probably

I would have transferred as soon as they said they wanted me to run the ball in on the gaol line.

He'd have to transfer to a shyt school though. He couldn't beat out a RS Freshman, no way he's gonna go to a big school and be their starter like that.

blake bell got friggin robbed, i dont care if some rs freshman has a terrific spring, you give the vet the first start and if he struggles then you toss in knight.

If I'm bell im out of there, many schools he could eat all

Yeah, he might be a decent fit in Andersen's system. Would still have to throw the ball though, and he's obviously not gonna be that guy.

OU doesn't recruit QB's who can't throw. The whole Blldozer thing wasn't even an option until we were having trouble in short yardage situations.

Dude is a good passer
