1. you are respected when you fight and sacrifice. the japanese showed A LOT of heart. Even after burning Tokyo to the ground, they were prepared to fight to the last man, it took not 1, but 2 nukes. Despite popular belief, violence and a dog fight will gain respect from your adversary. out of all the native american tribes, the apache is the most respected, even tho they were considered the most savage and non white friendly. They never really got conquered by the U.S govt, it took other apaches working for them, to conquer them. present day, they get money and arent confined to reservations, it was always optional for them.

2. MacAurther had respect and a fondness for the japanese and vowed to help them rebuild.

3. they had a legit internationally recognized govt.
