I’ve watched this moment (not this one in particular) in a wildlife doc and something like 60% get eaten in the first 3 days :mjlol: :mjcry:
Damn, just looked up the stasts. Only about 1% survive to sexual maturity which doesn’t happen until they’re 20-50 yrs old :ohhh: the average lifespan is like 200 years tho :wow: :wow: imagine if we could have a conversation with a 200 yr old turtle breh

It's called R-strategy reproduction in zoological terms. You have a shytload of offspring simultaneously, invest nothing in caring for or protecting them, expect the vast majority to die, but because the #'s are so overwhelming and the predators can't possibly eat everything, a few are destined to make it through.

And crazy coincidence, I ran into this wikipedia page just today cause of a book I started:

Jonathan (tortoise) - Wikipedia

He lived in the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean for 50+ years in the 1800s, was brought to St. Helena Island in the South Atlantic in 1882, and has been living there ever since.

Think about it....he is old enough that he could have met Aaron Burr as a child. He was born approximately the same time that Frederick Douglass was born and he's still alive now. :mindblown:

@Rhakim “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice.”
