I'll grade it between a B and B plus. There are 5 major fight scenes. Of course you go like a half an hour of build up, background story. So that may lose some folks but it's not that bad. 3D, doesn't hurt but not must see either. I would def. go to an Emagine type of theatre though.
The aliens are def. the stars of this film. They're intelligent, fierce fighters. There are different type of fighters so it's not just one type of alien. ONe of the fight scenes is one of the best of the summer. (Let's just say, they get lifted.) Each alien has different strengths and fighting skills. Now, the good guy robots are dope. When you're watching this film, it's like they're so big, you have to tilt your head back to see at the top. It's like looking at walking building. It's dope how they did that.
The feel of this film, def. has that Japanese robot feel. From the way the robots are designed, to the overall feel of the film. That's what really makes this film unique. I'm not a fan of those Japanese films (not b/c they're bad, just not really exposed to it). But if it's successful, I wonder if this will start a new style of film in Hollywood?
This is not a "Transformers" remake. It has it own flava. It's feels more like modern Godzilla in the fighting. Mixed with Voltron, Alien and Jurassic Park rolled into one.
Idris, is def. UK Idris. Nothing American about him. He is a brother in charge and though white people do get out of line, he reminds them he's the HNIC. The other stars is an Asian girl. I can see Americans getting upset with her b/c she's not Americanize. She has respect for authority, doesn't talk much. Sounds like my kind of woman (jk). But she def. has fighting skills.
The main star is ok. He doesn't capture me but he's your typical All American white boy.
Ending was ok but nothing really surprising. There def. were some cheesy moments, mixed with cheesy music. It def. funny at parts but again this ain't no Transformers where they try to be silly. Don't leave before the credits. There is one funny part during the credits.
Of course people on this board will hate these type of movies as usual (have no idea why you waste 2 hours something you know you'll hate. But hey, it's the Coli). But if you're looking for some solid one on on fighting with that Japanese feel to it. This might be the one for you. Not a classic but one of the better summer films. I would love to see this in Imax though. With the height of these walking robots, it would be nuts!!
Finally, the main flaw with the fighting scenes. They're all at night. Which is understandable since they wanna go with the "neon lights" feel with the aliens. But sometimes you don't get the full effect b/c it's dark. And not seeing the punches the way it should. Would have been way better seeing them banging during the daylight. But again, if you like that Alien, Transformers, Godzilla, monsters chasing people like Jurassic Park, this may be your type of film.
