Just had a phone call, me mum says me dad was on his poetry website and a screen came up saying the computer was contaminated and asked him to download something, he clicked no and then thing downloaded anyway, from what they tell me, they are getting constant popups, which are porn and other weird things. and they are finding it difficult to use the computer and are obviously worried about accessing bank accounts etc etc.

They tell me ,this thing got through avast which had been loaded up onto their computer by the shop they bought it from, They still have a working internet connection, but apparently malware bytes when they attempted to download it on firefox ,they left it half hour and there was zero progress, and their internet connection isn't slow.I told them to first power the computer down and turn off the internet connection for five minutes and switch things back on again but it's still there.

After talking to them again just now, I asked them to check add/remove programs to see if anything was on there that was unusual, they claim nothing, but said firefox had been installed today which is when this popup thing started happening, I presume this means that firefox has updated itself. but also they tell me that is the only thing they noticed.

Iam quite limited in what I can do as they are in france at the moment, and it's the weekend so they won't be able to get anyone out till monday.

Any suggestions .that are relatively simple as they are middle aged and not IT literate.

Make sure the virus definitions are up-to-date for the virus program.

Run Microsoft security essentials and do a "FULL" scan.

Run download/install CCleaner - http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/

Go to task manager - Process and see if you see any funny named processes running.

You'll probably want to do the virus definition update and then go into Safe Mode and run the virus scanners.. This way the virus shouldn't be running.

This.

Go into Safe Mode, but run Malware Bytes over MS Security Essentials/Defender. Your parents' have a rootkit(s) so Malware Bytes won't catch it unless the computer is in Safe Mode.

Quarantine the results and wipe the system restore points (they can contain malware).
