New Measurements of Muons Might Rewrite Particle Physics | Smart News | Smithsonian Magazine

Sometimes when I read these articles it just amazes me sometimes the extent to which the scientific community, really worldwide, and what it does on a daily basis is just so divorced and alien to most people :russ:

There are people who work on studying subatomic particles, with crazy colliders and shyt, using language and knowledge of which 99% of people are almost universally ignorant :francis:

Sometimes I think these mfers announce shyt like this knowing most people are just going to briefly skim and say "oh cool I guess" and not push back on any increased funding :ohhh:

I know someone who worked on the LHC. He was mostly mum, probably knew I was an idiot

I saw an article about this a few days ago as well I thought it was amusing. I still remember some prodigy program as a kid talking about there wasn’t anything smaller than a quark, I guess at that time..

:troll:Wonder what they’ll be saying 20 years from now.

yeah, i saw this the other day. what they've got so far (barring some statistical fluke or human fukk-up) suggest the muons are interacting with something beyond our current models. undiscovered particles, or maybe a whole different force we don't know of. shyt, could be both even? who knows?:yeshrug:

whatever the case, they have work to do to prove this further but if the findings hold up, it'd be a game-changer.
