A 24-year-old woman was getting ready to travel from the UK to Dubai when she and her boyfriend were removed from the plane—thanks to her menstrual period, the Times of London reports.
Beth Evans says that after she boarded the Emirates flight in Birmingham, a flight attendant overheard her talking to her boyfriend, 26-year-old Joshua Moran, about having period cramps and the couple soon found themselves removed from the plane after the flight attendant expressed concerns about Evans' health, the Washington Post reports.
Evans says she and Moran were forced to disembark even though she rated her pain a one on a scale of one to 10. They had to pay $350 each to re-book on a different flight.
"To be kicked off for period pains, it was madness. Beth was in tears and getting upset when the hostess was asking her questions," Moran tells the Sun, adding that Evans was not examined by a doctor before the crew asked them to leave.
"It’s embarrassing to have to explain about period pains when it’s being overheard." An Emirates rep says that since Evans was "suffering from discomfort and pain," the captain decided "to request medical support and offload Ms. Evans so she could access medical assistance. The safety of our passengers and crew is of paramount importance, and we would not have wanted to endanger Ms. Evans by delaying medical help had she worsened during the seven-hour flight."
