Biological warfare?

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’ The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox. Since then monkeypox has been reported in humans in other central and western African countries.

Genetic engineering wasn't even invented until the 1970s, but you think they genetically engineered a biological warfare virus in 1958?

Several monkey-origin viruses were discovered among research monkeys in those days (Marburg is another one that comes to mind immediately) because virologists were hardly working in rural Africa back then, so their first exposure to these diseases was often in western labs that had monkeys who had been caught in Africa and then transported overseas.[/color]
