In an email to his parishioners, Bishop Ellis wrote: "I recently was made aware of social media posts shared by a former member of my congregation, with whom I had an inappropriate relationship over 15 years ago," Free Press investigative reporter M.L. Elrick reports.

Ellis said the posts include accusations, "some of which are deeply troubling and untrue." He did not specify which allegations were false or name the parishoner.

Ellis is married and has three children, including his daughter Kirsten, who died in 1994.


A woman named Melody Walker posted a video on TikTok account "Melodic" claiming she had an on-and-off affair with Bishop Ellis from 2002 until 2018. She also displayed bank statements on the video from Bank One bearing both her name and the bishop’s.

"If I could help another woman overcome and learn her... intrinsic value and not compromise herself for money... then I'm going to help women do that," she said in the TikTok video. "And that's what this is about—me helping somebody else."

"I just finally have the courage to talk about it. I finally have overcome the fear of something happening to me for speaking out. We do live in Detroit—people come up missing and dying all the time—but I feel God, and I just... I know that the Lord is with me."

"I don't blame him. I was in love. I believe he cared for me deeply, so this is not about blaming anybody."

She also posted photos on social media of her and the bishop, and is promoting a book about the affair titled: "The Bishop, His Wife, and Me."

In his statement to the congregation, Bishop Ellis said he turned to his own bishop around the time of the relationship and that "these indiscretions were addressed... in a redemptive process, which included counseling," Elrick reported.

Mario Morrow, whom Ellis retained to help manage the potential controversy, declined to elaborate.

"The statement speaks for itself," Morrow told the Freep.
