The Super Bowl brings out the casual gambler in all of us. Heads or tails??? How long will the anthem last? What outfit will Katy Perry be wearing? All things people could have bet on yesterday.
But clearly the big ticket is still the game itself, where the New England Patriots opened up as early favorites at -1. That line eventually moved to a pick 'em on gameday.
From ESPN yesterday:
"We're taking more bets on the Patriots, but the more substantial money has been on the Seahawks," Jason Simbal, vice president of risk for CG Technology, said Saturday. "What we've been seeing lately is for every two-, three-, four- or five-hundred dollar bet that comes in on New England, we'll then take a five-figure bet on Seattle."
So if the line most people bet on was a pick 'em or 1-point spread, the final drive determined every bets outcome. So there were a ton of very happy, and very sad people when the Butler did it by picking off Russell Wilson in the final minute.
But just how much money switched hands on that fateful play?
ESPN Business/Twitter reporter Darren Rovell spoke with handicapper Danny Sheridan who estimates a whopping $5 billion dollars were on the line. That includes both legal bets made in Las Vegas and other places around the world where sports betting is legal but also illegal bets like the bookie you know from high school.
This is not a scientific calculation but rather one "expert" putting an estimate on a crazy amount of cash.
Danny Sheridan estimates at least $5 BILLION changed hands around the world (legal & illegal) on the final INT last night.
