I think people respect someone more if they have let something take over their lives and managed to overcome it. It's why brehs who never drank, smoke etc are looked at as lame or weird but people who came back "clean" from alcoholism, heroin etc are looked at as an inspiration. It's a really interesting notion because it looks at the human condition as being inherently flawed...when you symbolize virtue/purity you are dismissed yet when the masses see your weakness/flaws you are embraced as one of them
