Causality is certainly a thing, but I doubt that that is what most people think of when they evoke this platitude. Truth is, life is suffering, and we are each tasked with finding a way to make it worthwhile or meaningful. While I don't believe in esoteric reasons for unfortunate circumstances or vibrations, I try not to knock people for believing in stuff like that if it gets them through the day.
