So Cal
When I was in 8th grade we took a test to help determine our future career path. The results from my test were that I needed a lot of help in choosing that path.... 11 years later and shyt ain't changed. I went to school and got a degree in electronics and I've been working as a technician basically since I finished high school, but it's not what I want to do. Thing is I have no idea what the hell I wanna do.

So to the posters with careers, can you guys and ladies help me out? What you do? Is the pay good? How'd you get into? Are you happy?

I just resigned from my gig on Wednesday (long story) but now I have a chance to sit back and reflect on what I really wanna do. The #1 thing for people like you or myself would be to start a business and become an investor. You will never be satisfied working a 'job'. Don't care what anyone says.

Think long and hard before you commit to something for 40 years.

You using the word "yaw" in a thread asking for career advice is off-putting. I figure you're not serious or going to take any serious advice.

http://www.careerplanner.com/ListOfJobs.cfm

Take a minute and pick something off that list you actually want to do, and go do it.

It's that simple.

There's this book called "What Color Is Your Parachute?" There's a rainbow colored parachute on the front cover but has nothing to do with the ghey lifestyle, if you're the type of person who judges books by their covers.
It helps you find out what kind of work you would find satisfying that correlate to your personality, character, etc. Then, when you find that out, then they list a bunch of jobs that fit your personality. You might like to help people. So you would have jobs like nurse or dentist. Then, you are the type of person who likes to work alone, so then instead of working in groups of people, they would have service-type jobs for people who work alone. This might be something like plumber or electrician. Whether you get paid a lot or not, the work of the job would be satisfying.

Then, you have people like me who, I'm okay with the work that I do but it pays well. That lets me afford things i like and hobbies and stuff outside of work.

I'm not serious because I used the word "yaw"? Why would I have made the thread if I wasn't serious? I edited for you though.

Your degree in electronics, is it for engineering? If so, you need zero help. If not, look for positions in the private sector for companies on Fortune 500, hopefully you'll have at least two or three near you.

I work private sector as an IT specialist, the pay isn't 6 figures but up there, when I moved back to FL from up north I went on a spree of interviews and landed this one.

Am I happy? I can't complain. :yeshrug: Could always do better but I'm comfortable.

There is no need to over-think it

When I was younger there was the "be a doctor" thing so I was going to become a gynaecologist, set up a practice, open a women's only gym in the same building, have a shopping centre, cafe....basically I was thinking about the business aspect. So after deciding not to become a doctor, trying out investment banking and deciding it wasn't for me, finally settled on a business degree and got a job with a fortune 500 and they will pay me well so I can invest and slowly move into business.

Take what you will from my story but what I have learnt and has worked for me is to try different things. Firstly it will allow you to eliminate the things you definitely don't want to do but you will also get new transferable skills and it will make you that much more interesting in an interview.

I've been to events with speakers with very interesting careers and most of them have switched e.g. one with a psychology degree, worked in marketing, then went into research then became a consultant then back to research got her PhD now owns her own consulting firm. Another one started on in publishing then recruitment then education. The list goes on and on, find a thread that will link where you are and where you want to be and use it. Just do it. Keep your bigger picture in mind, don't get too bogged down with the details.

The course was computers and electronics engineering technology so maybe. The only problem is every IT job post I've ever seenrequires experience. The only experience I have is repairing electronic shyt.

Yeah, a lot of them say that but it shouldn't deter you from applying. If you have schooling, a lot of the experience can be washed out. That's why I said look into the Fortune 500 companies, they're trying to scoop up the qualified newbies over overqualified vets.
