how the hell did you get them?! :dwillhuh:

something as simple as clerical work i cant get hired for :sadbron:

chicago has to be the hardest to get a job in. so im feeling hopeful when i apply other places. is it harder to get a job in another city when you dont live in that city yet? any tips to make my app stand out? am i too young to get a job through any government? if i apply for something like cashier, will that make it easier for me to get a regular, salaried job?

i only know one person that works with the gov. he's a p.o and he got in because interned with them anyway. help me, help me please

none, ba in psych
lot of customer service jobs and working with children

It's not what you know

:troll:

yeah let me amend that
my mom works for the gov (county) and when she first started, maybe 30 years ago, you had to go downtown and take the tests and wait for call backs. she went down there everyday doing typing tests and shyt. its basically the same way today

my point being, her ass has been little help

Yeah, they still have tests in NYS for most of the state jobs I've heard of. You advance on tests as well(there's levels to this shlt or w/e lol) .

There are usually hiring phases/windows as well.

A BA in psych can probably get you a halfway decent job, at least better than customer service with benefits. Can you be a school counselor etc? May need a masters...

Google is pretty helpful.

I'd imagine they'll figure it out but I'd also heard Cook County and possibly Illinois are verging on bankruptcy so you may want to keep that in mind but Im assuming you're young.

yeah i dont have the credentials to be a counselor. i think you may need a masters

i've interviewed with chicago before. know all about work.il.gov, usajobs, whatever. went downtown took typing tests. but thats as far as it goes, interview then nothing because the jobs they called me in for (clerical) i have no office experience and the jobs i want, they dont call me in for.

but im moving out of chicago, so im hoping its easier other places. it seems you have to jump through a lot of hoops and just be a miserable person

i guess what im asking is, how did you get into your gov position

Try following up with departments to see why you were declined or what you need to do to secure a position. Gain a year of clerical work somewhere, I'd imagine there's a bevy of that in Chicago.

I've had family members in city and state gov so I'm familiar but never went into it myself.

Almost got a job with MTA a few years ago but that was through connections.

Keep your options open.
1. Look for federal, state, county, and city job websites.
2. Look for non-public sector jobs.
3. Look for non-military civilian jobs in the military. Check out usajobs.gov

Just apply. That's all I can say. Don't get down on yourself if everyone rejects you and you don't get any call backs.

I worked in the cook county building when I was 19 back in 1997. ONLY reason I got that job is cuz my cousin worked there. I didn't do much either. first half of the day, I slept at my desk since my cubicle was in a corner.

from what I understand, u gots to know anyone to get a gov't job. I have a friend who got a job at the social security administration. she got that job cuz one of her sorority sisters put her on.

I dont know anyone who has gotten one of those type of jobs thru conventional means with applying as a stranger off the street and getting hired.

hate to break it to you, but a bachelor's in a liberal art like psychology is useless. my wife has her master's in psychology, and that ain't that much better. she will be done with her PhD, but it takes so much education just to get a foot in the door in that field.

thats basically how it works. you pretty much need word of mouth to get a foot in the door for any job these days tho. gov't or not.

the job I got now, I got on cuz a former co-worker from my last job got hired and referred me.

my wife got her job thru the husband of one of her old co-workers.

ay @muse , one of my old job has a couple clerical positions. I'm still cool with the folks in charge there. I don't think they would be high paying at all tho so I'm not sure if ur interested. the industry is health care tho.
