"Aldon Smith could enter rehab as early as this week. Those close to him and team are concerned about him and are pushing for it in order for him to get help. Has already been discussed 49ers are working with Aldon on this totally independent of league punishment. There is genuine concern. It's up to Aldon to decide this week if he goes or not."

But the 49ers are letting Smith play today–despite telling reporters they’re concerned about him–because… ?

Because they want to win a football game, period.

That’s what NFL teams are built on–the will to win and the desire to make great gobs of money doing it–and this is raw and undeniable. They want to win this game.

This is not happening because CBA rules prevent Smith from being de-activated; the rules allow it (he’d be paid, so what could Smith recoup if he protested a de-activation?).
It’s not because they think Smith is fine… if what they’re telling reporters is true and they’re concerned about Smith’s actions…. starting Monday, I guess. Convenient! (Or maybe that treatment center won’t get the paperwork done until Friday, so he can–oops–play Thursday in St. Louis! So caring!)
It’s not because there is precedent for the 49ers to play a player who was arrested Friday before a Sunday game, because it goes against the precedent set by their handling of Demarcus Dobbs last year.

It’s not because the 49ers don’t sit players–they sat Brandon Jacobs last year for being critical of his handling by Harbaugh and Baalke.
