Petland Discounts, the Tri-State area pet supply company, is closing all of its stores in New York, including one in New Rochelle. The closing comes after the death of the company's sole owner.

Neil Padron succumbed to bladder cancer earlier this month, according to Pet Product News. He was 74.

The company had 69 locations across New York, and all of them are expected to close by April 18, according to filings with the state Labor Department. The closures will leave 367 people across the state without jobs.

The first Petland Discounts store opened in Glen Oaks in 1965, according to Pet Product News, and grew to more than 100 stores across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

edit:
more layoffs

Petland Discounts Inc. is closing stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, according to filings with the states’ labor departments.

The closures in New York will see 367 people laid off, and affect stores including the location on North Avenue in New Rochelle, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor. The layoffs are to take place on or around April 18, according to the filing, which is required prior to layoffs.

The filing and similar notices in New Jersey and Connecticut followed reports earlier this month of the death of Neil Padron, who founded Petland in 1965. The company cited financial reasons for the closure of its stores. It wasn’t clear if the closures meant the company was completely going out of business.

Its filing with New Jersey listed up 30 layoffs at each of its 10 stores. The Connecticut filing showed seven layoffs at two locations.

A spokesperson for the company couldn't be reached late Wednesday.
