You already knew Pharrell Williams was Happy, but the former N*E*R*D frontman produced some of the earworm-iest tracks to hit the radio this millennium. He’s also big on charity, sustainability, and fashion.
Pharrell recently teamed up with Amsterdam-based G-Star Raw to launch a new clothing line called Raw For The Oceans. The shirts, jeans, sweaters, and hats are made with Return Textiles’ (where Williams is a part owner) eco-friendly Bionic Yarn. It’s a multi-layered fiber that contains recycled plastic harvested from ocean garbage — clearly a much better plan than scooping all the garbage up and shooting it into space a la Futurama.
To make Bionic Yarn, Return first grinds the reclaimed plastic into chips. The chips are then shredded and extruded into thread. It’s then spun together with other materials (cotton, polyester, and so on) and woven into fabric. When it’s all said and done, obviously, there’s really no way to tell that you’re wearing clothes that contain, say, bits of old water and pop bottles.
G-Star wasn’t just interested because of Pharrell’s considerable star power. They’ve always been big on sustainability and responsible manufacturing, and they dig innovative materials (like Tencel, which is made from fast-growing eucalyptus trees) too. The company has been making a big push in recent years to reduce the environmental impact of its line clothing production.
The result: a streetwear collection designed to get the message out about making sure that we humans allow the oceans to be happy, too. The pieces feature a cartoony little squid. He’s big and bold on some of the t-shirts while on other items — like Pharrell’s dress shirt and the ball cap — he’s shrunken down and stealthily worked into an all-over pattern.
