But not only language, even logic or reason.
If language did not exist how could you ponder, execute logic or reason?
Of course if there was no spoken or written language there would be body language, that's understood.
No sci-fi discussion though, I know ya'll thinking of planet of the apes with the body language mention!

But spoken/written language, if it did not exist how far could we reason, execute logic or ponder?
As humans we've evolved into smarter beings, but how much is "smarter" related to the existence of language?
Was language a necessary milestone for the human brain to physically evolve? Keep in mind that's a crazy question, because if the answer is yes then something non-tangible created something tangible.
language = non-tangible and increase in brain tissue = tangible.

Actually I think this is a fairly innovative topic that I thought of myself, I hope you will appreciate the creativity and participate in a discussion!

Go! Will post my views soon but wanted to get it started.

Simple. None. All the "thinking" we do is made of words. Hunger, fight, flight, and the desire to fukc just occur and we react. Without words that's what we're doing. Spending time looking for food and p*ssy.

Think about it like this: a dog is only able to exist in Human society once it knows words. The feral dog straight out of the woods is not able to do what it needs to do to coexist with people.

The same way a dog that knows words transforms into a member of a human family, a human is only a human (mentally) with language.

There is body language. Written Symbolic language. And Spoken language. Language = a form of communication.

Everything in life has a way of communication.
"Things" in life communicate to others and to itself. Thinking and reason is the act of seeking to communicate or present pieces of information / knowledge / experiences that have been REMEMBERED in a different way either to oneself or others (to solve a problem etc..).

Looking at it like this, TO ASK would we be able to think or reason without language is TO ASK would we be able to think without a form of communication. With the purpose of thinking being to communicate in some form... the question cancels itself out. Thus it is a wrong question to put. I could be mistaken..

Was language a necessary milestone for the human brain to physically evolve?

This seems like another wrong question to put. Doesn't really make sense, at least to me it doesn't. I would say experience and memory were necessary 'milestones' for the human brain to physically evolve and so for language to develop.

The human capacity for memory is the factor that distinguishes us from other life forms I think. It is this memory that allows our complex modes of thinking and reasoning. IF this is so, an interesting question would be..
..not How far could the human mind think if language did not exist but, could we even begin to consider the "thing" we call "mind" without memory??

Language is a tool that allows us to create organized thought.

A thought, is an idea, feeling, emotion, or whatever it might be, coming into form for the first time.

The form it takes is the word.

Something that didn't exist before becomes a physical object.

This object, the word, contains the ideas and feelings that made it come into form, in the beginning

But gradually, it loses them.

Until eventually the meaning of a word might be completely different from its original intent.

Words lose their value over time

in my opinion logic and words are a less advanced form of thought for man.

Also.... if not in terms of spoken or written language, I don't see why we would not simply 'reason' or 'think' in terms of body language.

Don't people do this all the time (those who are deaf and unable to speak) and isn't Sign language a form of body language? Don't they reason and think in such terms?? I'm reminded of the famous author, philosopher: Helen Keller. She was blind, and deaf yet she wrote books and was a great thinker
