Shhhh, they don't hear you though. But people seem to have a real hard on for these 2 & this tanking idea.
The knicks need to prepare for after Melo. why not take the chance that before Melo is done a high pick prospect could get there shyt together in 2-3 seasons like high picks tend to do?
It makes for bad tv but getting a high draft pick isn't a bad thing. Especially when they know they won't get another chance for another 2 years. This rookie will have a chance to get his shyt together before Melo is too old, the next one is even less likely to.
Naw he kept melo halfheartedly. Same reason Kobe is still a laker with that huge contract. Sells TV rights jerseys tickets etc. But Phil sees the writing on the wall just like Walsh before him. A rebuild is in order to fix the foundation.
In hindsight I think a rebuild was always the plan. With the talk about it taking a while to learn the triangle. To phil looking for first year coaches who might be willing to take a job just to get there foot in the door and not stress their win/loss records. I do think the knicks make a trade around december 15th to move JR but it might just be for expirings.
Also give Phil credit Walsh made a ton of shytty moves to get Lebron up to the last second of him going to Miami. At least the knicks admit Gasol isn't likely to come early and are planning accordingly. All this talk I think is to ease the fanbase into the reality the knicks are tanking. The only real argument against it was "they need to impress Gasol" once thats out the window there is no reason not to tank.
who do you suggest? we aint getting gasol or lamarcus
and monroe aint better than jefferson
Yeah but monroe is young, he'll be 25 this summer and considering that their is a lot of indication that the cap won't go up this year. His max is 16 million (even the % growth in his contract is cheap cause he took his qualifying offer). If the knicks get a rookie big to put beside him (who pans out) that means they will have a front court duo (both being around 7 feet tall) going into their prime instead of coming out.
The reason a lot of people are hyping towns over okafor is he is the best potential fit to put next to Monroe (the likeliest FA pickup) . He is a rim protector that covers for Monroe, but he also is a excellent passer (like monroe) and can score outside the paint as well as in it. Combined those two would work great in the triangle. After Gasol, Monroe is the best passing big man available and more than great defense it needs passers. That's why Pau was able to excel in it and he's never been a great defender. To give it another layer people say towns reminds them of bynum but with a better outside shot, passing, and no knee issues. Myles Turner also fits what they need but not as well.
Lets say it take two seasons for them to get to get it together. Melo will be 32. That is still young enough to be a winner (and the knicks will have a better overall team using all that cap space). same if it take them 3 years. So in 3 years that front court along with Melo will cost about 45 Million. That will be about half the knicks cap (maybe less) after the salary jump. Compared to last few years where Melo and the front court took up all the cap. That means the knicks can actually have decent roleplayers on the roster which is where they've suffered the most since the 2010 Melo trade.
I look at this season as the bottom. The knicks recently just circle the drain or over perform in the season. Struggling to get to the playoffs with a team of journey men just to draft in the late teens in pointless. The higher they draft the better chance they get a player that will contribute quicker as well. Even if Melo is done before the pick gets it together. The knicks could have a great front court to build around in a few seasons as well.
