I bought a used moto g 2015 from Craigslist about a month after it came out
He said he had it rooted but put it back to stock before giving it to me
I keep getting the notification that the marshmallow update it available
I download it but it always fails while updating

Same happens to me on my 6P. It's rooted and every time I try to update it just goes straight to TWRP and when I reboot it goes back to the main home screen without it updated.

I'd like to know of a fix for this as well

That's because the OTA updates are typically set to work with the default recovery. When you root and install TWRP or CM as your recovery, you have to either install manually or use one of the compatible apps like Rom Manager or something to update.

Haven't been on Android for months, so I'm not sure of which apps are preferred by the community now.

OTA updates no longer work on a rooted device, the update scans the system for any changes before updating so that's why it fails. You're gonna need a pc if you want to get the official update.
