Depends on the tools you actually need.
You can get photoshop and lightroom for $10 a month and if you have a student email you get a discounts.
Adobe Creative Cloud
Yeah. I fought it at first too but I honestly don't mind anymore.i hate the fact that Adobe is subscription based now.
What are you trying to do with your pictures exactly? Pixlr is a free program similar to Gimp.
Man, I'll be honest I'm not very good at this I'm a beginner. It's something I want to do for the team Twitter page. I coach a bunch of kids and I think they'll like to see this. How's your photoshop skills? Adding the background to a pic is actually pretty easy. Do you know how to render (cut out images) well?

macmac or pc?
I think photoshop is best for image editing, but my computer at home isn't good enough to have photoshop so I just use Pixlr. Watch a couple videos on "Rendering" and you should be good to go.
These are a few of my pictures I've done with Pixlr. I used the 1991-1992 Skybox basketball cards as the background and luckily I found the soccer players images already cut out. Just had to remove the NBA players from the cards and do a little touch up. They aren't great, but it was good practice.
