I remember I first read it years ago and was blown away with the vividness of Slim describing black Chicago in the 30' and 40's it was like I was actually there. The same way Malcolm brought to life Boston and Harlem and black society.

Slim's writing is so colorful and rich the shyt sticks to your ribs.

I wouldn’t go there...I’m reading it now...very good read so far although I’m sometimes thrown off by the heavy vernacular of the time that he uses not just w/ the dialogue but w/ the narration as well...what he lacks as far as technical skills in writing he more than makes up for tho in his ability to bring ppl/places off the pages when he writes about them and that’s something that can’t necessarily be taught
