It's not the mechanics. It's management, especially the bean counters trying to stretch budgets to squeeze profits as far as they can...they're the ones that ignore maintenance schedule recommendations, they're the ones cutting corners on regulations. One shift in fuel prices will ripple out and touch all sorts of things and have them testing limits: "let's see if we can squeeze another 10, 15, 50 flights out of this..."
Of course, playing those games with something as serious as aviation is completely insane, but...money.
