So much mystery still surrounds Chase's disappearance. He was reported missing in South Charleston where his handler lived. South Charleston police determined on April 20 that Chase did not run away, like the handler initially reported, and was not stolen.

Mayes said he began training Chase, who is a Belgian Malinois, at about two years old. Their training took about five months as he trained him in narcotics detection.

In training, Mayes said he often gets dogs who are difficult to work with but that was not the case with Chase.

Chase was one of those that you just liked having around and he took to training well-liked to work with me," Mayes said.
Mayes said from the beginning the story did not add up to him because he found it hard to believe Chase would run away without approaching anyone.

“Anything’s possible, but I don’t believe for a second he just ran off and didn’t try to connect with anyone," he said.

Chase is a social dog, according to Mayes, who enjoys a task and would not be just wandering around.

He was very social with no aggression - easy to handle. His world revolved around playing with a ball," Mayes said.
Mayes said it is a time investment to train these dogs and thousands of dollars go into it as well. He said his heart hurts thinking about what could have happened to Chase especially knowing his career was just getting started.

“You’re hoping for the best but at this point, I don’t expect him to be returned," Mayes said.

Mayes added if someone has Chase in a home, and the dog is not actively working or training, he would be pacing, acting out and looking for things to do.

This case is still being treated as a missing K-9 investigation by the South Charleston
