ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As the Albuquerque Police Department cracks down on organized retail crime, one of their own is now accused of shoplifting. Even while driving a government vehicle to the store.
According to a criminal complaint, an Albuquerque police officer is facing four charges for shoplifting at two Albuquerque target stores and was caught on video doing it. In fact, one of the Albuquerque police officers called to investigate the thefts immediately recognized her in the surveillance pictures as one of their officers.

According to a criminal complaint, an Albuquerque police officer is facing four charges for shoplifting at two Albuquerque target stores and was caught on video doing it. In fact, one of the Albuquerque police officers called to investigate the thefts immediately recognized her in the surveillance pictures as one of their officers.
According to the criminal complaint, Vanessa Santillanes got away with almost $160 worth of beauty products and shoes on four separate occasions from the target locations on Coors and on Paseo.
The court records state Santillanes is a patrolman second class for APD. Investigators say she was involved in ticket switching, where she scanned products with barcodes switched with cheaper-priced items at self-checkout.
Police say on April 17, Santillanes was at Target on 9371 Coors Blvd NW when she scanned a body cream which should have cost $28, but she scanned it for 50 cents. The same day, the document reads she scanned a tanning product which has a retail price of $40, but Santillanes scanned it for 50 cents again. The police report said she used plastic cups to do the ticket switches. The store lost almost $70 that day.
During another trip on April 30, she ticket switched again according to documents, but this time with shoes; causing a loss of more than $35 to the Target at 6100 Paseo Del Norte NE. The other incidents were in June and November where she got away with more than $50 in other beauty products.
According to police, in her last incident, she was seen leaving the parking lot in her government vehicle. When investigators interviewed Santillanes, they say she confirmed that she was the person in the surveillance photos.
According to APD, Santillanes is on leave during the investigation, and the Attorney General’s office has taken over the case. She is facing four counts of shoplifting charges under $250 which is a petty misdemeanor. She is set to appear in court on January 9.
