What's really scary about this is that it is completely normal for the times. The folks complaining were the ones getting squeezed. Everyone, from businessmen, to the NYPD, had mob influences in their circles.

We tend to talk about "white supremacy" at the political level, and completely leave out the Irish, Jewish, Russian, and Italian mob from the equation; unless we're specifically talking about an FBI investigation. When we talk about redlining and other discriminatory practices, we never talk about the influence of the mob over building codes, school board zoning, employment practices, etc.
