Austria to close 7 mosques, expel imams in crackdown

BERLIN — Austria's government said Friday that it is closing seven mosques and plans to expel imams in a crackdown on "political Islam" and foreign financing of religious groups.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the government is shutting a hardline Turkish nationalist mosque in Vienna and dissolving a group called the Arab Religious Community that runs six mosques.

The actions by the government are based on a 2015 law that, among other things, prevents religious communities from getting funding from abroad. Interior Minister Herbert Kickl said the residence permits of around 40 imams employed by ATIB, a group that oversees Turkish mosques in Austria, are being reviewed because of concerns about such financing.

Kickl said that, in two cases, permits have already been revoked. Five more imams were denied first-time permits.

The conservative Kurz became chancellor in December in a coalition with the anti-migration Freedom Party.

In campaigning for last year's election, both coalition parties called for tougher immigration controls, quick deportations of asylum-seekers whose requests are denied and a crackdown on radical Islam. The government recently announced plans to ban girls in elementary schools and kindergartens from wearing headscarves, adding to existing restrictions on veils.

"Parallel societies, political Islam and tendencies toward radicalization have no place in our country," Kurz told reporters in Vienna. He added that the government's powers to intervene "were not sufficiently used" in the past.

Friday's measures are "a first significant and necessary step in the right direction," said Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, the Freedom Party's leader. "If these measures aren't enough, we will if necessary evaluate the legal situation here or there."

the black cat is my crown...
i don't know anything about austrian politics but just what i'm reading here doesn't sound like an issue... it doesn't sound like they are targeting islam in general, but a specific strand of it that they feel is radicalized...

A little background on Austria is that they recently elected their youngest chancellor, who's like 30 years old. Dude is the equivalent to an alt right member coming into power.

The way I see it is, it's gradual steps towards placing limitations of Muslims. The real problematic feat I have, is should government really be involved saying what people can and can't wear. It's obvious that their attacking Islam to me, when they go after restricting women from wearing headscarves. Let me guess they're scared of terrorist disguising themselves as women, to carry out an attack :comeon:

I'm sure in that past that has happened, but on a large scale most people practicing Islam aren't terrorist nor do they harbor malicious intent.

What is being implied by "big government?"
Austria is being led by a far-right Chancellor and a moderate PM.
This is an example of xenophobic policy from a xenophobic European country.

The way Interrupted it is they're forcing people not be of one faith.
The far-right is usually conservative, but hates when the government trends on "their rights" this is a universal theme. Ironically it's acceptable for the far right to impose restrictions on other religions / groups of people arent anglo-saxon protestant.

Basically I'm making a stretch case for the hypocrisy in far right ideology, while using Austria as a test or precursor of things to come in America, because I firmly believe that Trump and many conservative would impose these same type of restrictions if they could.

The point is they're gradually stripping away rights through the usage of government.

So is it hands off government or is government interference in everyday life ok,when it's beneficial to dominant cultures ability to discriminate against "others".
