Yup. I don't mind it if it breaks up the Rodeo Road Trip a little more.
Plus they wanna further their reach in Central Texas in Mexico. I figure if they can expand their reach and build their base further out, it will help shed that "small market" franchise label.

No reason they shouldn't have all of Central Texas and South Texas from San Antonio to Corpus to the Valley all sowed up

Dallas by way of Houston by way of San Antonio
9th pick :francis:

Couple of first round mocks for the Spurs:

ESPN+

9. San Antonio Spurs
Dyson Daniels
G League Ignite
PG/SG
Age: 19.1

The Spurs have quite a few young players in the backcourt but are in full-fledged talent-acquisition mode and will be thinking hard about picking the best long-term prospect they can acquire with this pick. Adding a versatile guard who can play in a variety of lineup configurations and do a little bit of everything could be attractive here, especially considering the type of players Gregg Popovich typically values. Daniels is an outstanding defender who fills up the box score with rebounds, assists, blocks and steals, and has plenty of upside to grow into considering he just turned 19 years old.

Bleacher Report:

9. San Antonio Spurs: Jalen Duren (Memphis, C, Freshman)

Despite Duren's limited creation and shooting skills, in the late lottery, the Spurs should see value in adding a potential top rim protector to their rotation. And having Dejounte Murray to set the table should only optimize the 6'11", 250-pounder's 7'5" wingspan and exciting leaping ability.

Duren isn't really the type of floor-spacing big franchises prefer these days, but he's such a physical specimen and great athlete that there's probably a place for him in the top 10 of this draft. At worst, he should be a terrific rim-running and rim-protecting center who alters shots and dunks everything.

SI dot com

9. Spurs: Johnny Davis, SG, Wisconsin
Height: 6' 4" | Weight: 195 | Age: 20 | Sophomore

Davis boasts many of the traits San Antonio has traditionally favored in prospects: he is an intense competitor and worker, has strong feel on both ends of the floor, and boasts an unusually adept mid-range touch that teams hope will lead to more consistency from deep. He’s among the safer prospects in the lottery, and his rapid development points to even more room for growth, considering how seriously he takes his craft. As a smaller two-guard who’s more of a natural scorer than lead playmaker, you have to really believe in Davis’s intangibles to see star potential. But the likelihood he’s a longtime valuable player feels quite high regardless, and he figures to come off the board in the back half of the top 10.

Alright so how does taking Duren fix anything?

The problem with the Spurs right now is they don't have a Center who is a scoring threat.
And the solution here is to draft a Center who isn't a scoring threat.

What?

Unless this kid is going have Rudy Gobert-level defense, I don't see the point. You're still going to have a roster with spacing issues that's heavily reliant on their guards to do all their scoring. Like, WTF is this?
If they're going this route they should have just fukkin taken Kai Jones last year. It's the same shyt.

I don't know. What am I missing here?

Maybe I'm overreacting on Duren.

By default he's gotta be way more athletic than Poetl so I guess there's that.
It's just disappointing the Spurs didn't get a better draft position.

I can see how strong Duren is and will grow to be. The Spurs would have to work A LOT on his offensive game, and Center is a position that seems to take longer to develop than others. But if they go this route I'm becoming more optimistic about it.

The other mock picks that I'm seeing -- Christian Braun SG at #25 and Jalen Hardy SG at #20 are interesting.
They still need a bigger body at PF. But I guess they're just gonna ride it out with Keldon
