I have had a period in my life where I had to choose between paying rent or food for the month. It's not because i'm from a 1st world country that I don't know brokeness.

When I was financially stupid I had a long period where I was working full time just to be broke. I'm not saying it compares to what they are going thru but I was working 5 days a week 38h a week and I still was broke.

But never in my entire life would I have thought about pimping out my girlfriend or child.

Tourists are usually the best protected people in these places, the local/national economy drives on people coming over and spending their money.

That's why it immediately becomes news if even one tourist gets got or ends up missing, and the crackdowns on the locals go beyond arresting somebody.
