On the eve of the All-Star Game, the NBA announced one of its most ambitious projects in years: the formation of the Basketball Africa League.

Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia likely to be represented." There are already several professional teams across Africa, but this league will attempt to unify them into one place while providing financial support, resources and training. There will be qualifying tournaments held to determine which teams make the league with the nations of Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia likely to be represented.

The NBA has heavily invested in Africa with programs such as Basketball Without Borders and Giants of Africa in addition to having an office in South Africa and academy in Senegal. Since the end of his presidency in 2017, President Obama has helped Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri, who hails from Nigeria, with the Giants of Africa youth basketball program.

“We’re excited to work closely with the NBA to develop and put in a place a professional league like none that we have ever seen in our region before,” said FIBA Africa Executive Director Alphonse Bile. “Through the Basketball Africa League, we can provide the many great clubs and players with the best possible environment to compete for the highest stakes.”

It doesn't seem like "his initiative". It just seems like something he has an interest (and therefore minor influence) in based on the video and your text.

Why are you trying to hate? It is his initiative. He is just trying to be humble to not take all the credit. He is doing good work trying to raise awareness and putting funds behind a Black basketball league. You know how many brothers can get jobs out of this? Stop hating on him.

what did Obama have to do with this?
Since the end of his presidency in 2017, President Obama has helped Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri, who hails from Nigeria, with the Giants of Africa youth basketball program.

from the article....definitely wouldn't call that a MAJOR initiative on his part

seems interesting though...no hate on this

So the NBA starts up a league to get the jump on the African moguls who should have and could started their own league. They have the talent and the NBA is playing the long game for developing future foreign talent, which I assume will be signed to contracts which simultaneously grants a specific NBA franchise to their rights as well. I am sure this league will still have plenty of non- black African owners just like it's creator..... Only saving grace is if this is owned and operated in large part by the team's countrymen, otherwise......... it's business as usual.
