The Great Paper Chaser
The only American team sport where the positions/players/era's get lumped together.
In football, Barry Sanders never won a title but is considered the greatest RB of all time.
Anthony Munoz is considered the greatest tackle and he never won a ring.
Why does MJ have to be compared to Wilt? You can't. They play 2 different positions and affect the game in 2 different ways.
It seems like the only consensus to be considered an all time great is being apart of all time great teams which entails too many unknown variables. You have to have a competent owner, GM, and get lucky in drafting the right players at the right time.
You can be a great player stuck on a bad team and ever get proper recognition.
MJ is an all time great, but if you're going to look at scoring, then you can't say its MJ. In any era, averaging 50 points a game for a season is hard to do. And the NBA never changed rules to keep Jordan from being dominant.
Stockton has the record for assists, but the guy he passed (Magic) was in the finals every year for almost a decade and has 5 titles.
Lebron is an all time great despite inadequate management on some of the teams he's played on. At the end of the day, if a player is an all time great, he's an all time great. The rankings are irrelevant when it's all said and done. Players play for money and championships. Kobe idolized Jordan and that fueled him to get more rings. The only way you can compare who's better is have them play on the same teams in the same era which is impossible.
But I know it won't stop. If you can't debate who's the greatest then there wouldn't be much else to talk about. If everyone acknowledged Lebron was an all time great, like Jordan, like Bird, like Wilt, then the discussion would be over and done with.
