All you need to know is what the basic elements of a beat and how to possibly replicate those sounds (kick, snare, hi-hat, other percussion). Make some kind of sythesizer-ish sound that can spread out over notes and there ya go. Here's somebody making a beat with Pepsi bottles two years ago.
