Weren't the Tutsis viewed as being higher status?

Yes, Tutsis have been the ruling class in Rwanda for centuries, and still are. Hutus dominated Rwandan politics for around 30 years after the Belgians left, but lost everything during the civil war.

The interesting thing genetically is that Tutsis seem to be mostly "Hutu" on their paternal side, having more Bantu y dna than Cushytic.

It's wild how this all started because colonizers created a false narrative about certain distinctions among the the populace and praised the other that had more European features.

Tutsi are like the Jews of Africa. They ended up losing a lot of people but somehow managed to come out on top, and they run Rwanda now.

Ugandan president is also a Tutsi.

He is not a Tutsi. He is Ankole,. The thing is, most ethnic groups from the Great Lakes have a similar genetic origin, and that is, the mix of Bantu, Nilotic and Cushytic. Of course, with different percentages depending on the ethnic group. Even Hutus have cushytic and nilotic admixture, but of course, is smaller percentages than groups like Kikuyu or Tutsi.

Yup it didn't even happen that long ago. Basically anyone over say 35 rembers it vividly. I visited the memorial and it was eerie. Literally kids would play with kids the day before then when it was announced folks went into like a zombie mode and would just be slaughtering their neighbors etc.

Sounds like a collective psychosis. It’s pretty jarring to think that can still happen anywhere on this earth, if the conditions are aligned.
