PS4 Pro's ability to render games at a native 4K resolution will be limited to a minority of titles, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House has acknowledged. But even so, he doesn't believe it's misleading to call the new system a 4K-capable console.
"I would say the majority [of games running at 4K on PS4 Pro] will be upscaled - at least based on the game portfolio I have seen to date," House told Digital Spy.
While some games will be able to render at a native 4K resolution (The Last of Us Remastered, Mantis Burn Racing and The Elder Scrolls Online are the only three confirmed so far), the majority of titles will achieve a "4K quality resolution" by adopting an upscaling technique called 'checkerboard rendering'.
The technique is impressive, according to people that have seen games using it on PS4 Pro, although not quite as clear as a native 4K resolution. So is it misleading to say that games run at 4K on PS4 Pro?
"No, I don't think so," House continued. "I think that whatever the term is, it's a question of whether people see a demonstrable difference in the game experience or not, rather than the term we use to apply to it.
"I think that's what people are looking for and they'll make their judgement as to whether that's working for them or not."
