I'm assuming that you are just ignorant to the concept of freestyling.
There's different styles of freestyles, do you think Big L classic freestyle with Jay was off-the-top? They were spitting written bars, that's what nearly everyone does. Very few people spit off the top, when they do, cats laugh at them for how wack they are, which is furthermore why no one does it. In the 80s, freestyles were just spit som bars. In the 90s, people would go on radio and spit some shyt of their coming albums. It was mostly to flex your versatility as an emcee in terms of flow, delivery etc. I've heard that Asap Rocky does his shyt off the top, which is weird cause the bars are just as dope as his album shyt.
