This is late as hell, but after that great win, I had to get something up. Didn't watch as closely as usual though, I admit.
Short Version - This was a gutsy, hard fought victory and virtually every player was at least decent performing out there. Melo let us see what happens when he's hitting his jumper and Galloway made a case for starting PG. John Wall ate us up early but was contained after and Beal was similarly contained. There are places for improvement, fast break defense and preventing guard penetration will be important...but defense at the rim was pretty solid between R-Lo, KP and KOQ. Our young guys continue to flash potential and got their first taste of a tight game. Fisher's decision making was strong in this one too, he trusted the right guys when they might not have been the obvious choices. This poise and composure from coach and players was completely missing last year.
Carmelo - This was game one Melo except with the shot falling. He mixed in catch and shoot opportunities with Iso's where he was a threat to both pass or fire. His averages in the first 3 games are 4 assists and 7 boards, which is exactly what he posted last night but this time he had the scoring efficiency to boot. This is why you have a star and the why the playoffs are a reasonable expectation, because Melo will have nights like this where he explodes. Defensively, the guy's been solid all year and was again last night. Just a great performance.
KP - It was an all around solid game with some good rebounding and flashes of versatility as a scorer. There were rookie mistakes mixed in, especially on a couple of his fouls, but that's expected from a young cat. His defense was solid though overall, but nothing particularly stood out to me on that end outside of him being a game defender who's not afraid to back down or pick up fouls defending at the rim. Right now he's kind of floating at times while the other guys are running the show, and that's okay because it allows him to pick and choose his times to attack...but it does get frustrating having such a versatile player relegated to such limited touches. He was open or in advantageous situations where guys slept on him a bit, especially Calderon surprisingly. 8 and 6 from our rookie in 20 minutes, definition of solid.
R-Lo - This guy's defense was borderline spectacular to me. Gortat is a game opponent and he really got nothing going. Offensively R-Lo still seems to be struggling as a post passer a bit but made some nice decisions amid the TO's. He had 4 Offensive boards, that's a nice showing. His screen setting, boxing out and defense don't really appear in the box score except in that final score...8 points, 8 boards, 3 assists and a pair of blocks...very good game.
Sasha - Offensively, I didn't love his shot selection and even the open looks were bricking last night. He did however make some savvy passes and limit reckless play. Defensively he did really well on Beal and seemed to be outworking damn near everybody. 25 mins seems like too much for a guy shooting that poorly, but he wasn't as frustrating to watch thanks to input everywhere else.
Calderon - Still wasn't good. He was outmatched against Wall (to be fair, everyone is) and he started the game looking to get his shot going at the expense of a guy like KP. He wasn't particularly good with Melo either, who operated most effectively from post ups and triple threat positions. I don't want to keep kicking this dude three games in a row, 20 minutes is probably fair for him since we need to at least try to sell him off at some point.
Galloway - The reason we need to sell him off is because Grant and Galloway are both poised to be effective triangle PG's. Galloway was nothing short of spectacular down the stretch. No one particularly stopped Wall and Beal but he was probably our most competent defender (Sasha has a case). He put up 14 efficient points, 4 assists, grabbed some boards out from the big men to the tune of 7 and continues to play very smart ball. He's what Calderon was supposed to be so far...protects the ball, shoots the ball well, plays smart basketball and has the added bonus of positive sum defensive play. This was a bit of a coming out party too since he's widely been overshadowed by Grant's superb vision and passing, but this guy was our best guard last night and showed the best chemistry with Melo I think we've seen from a guard in two years.
Grant - Grant had his most rookie looking game of the early point in the season. He picked up his dribble a bit too soon sometimes, was a bit inconsistent defensively (though still alright overall) and was a bit gun shy on the attack. That's not to make his game out to be poor, he was pretty damned solid. Wall is a brutal match-up and Sessions is a tough back-up to boot. Grant hit a clutch baseline three when finally forced to shoot, which hopefully helps him gain more confidence pulling the trigger. 7 points, a pair of boards and 3 steals...solid game for a rook.
KOQ - The combination of Lopez playing such quality ball and agile Wiz bigs meant he saw less minutes and was less effective then he'd been since preseason. He still brought the brand of physical, smart play that he always does though. Defensively it's nice to have a guy who won't miss a beat when R-lo is out. 10 points and just a couple of boards, but he was another solid player for 15 mins.
D-Will - In fifteen minutes, he was a bit erratic. He couldn't get much going and actually seemed to trust his jumper a bit less, which led to hesitation on a few looks that should have been quick hits. He had 7 points on 5 attempts and not much else. It was a quiet game, not all that effective but it should be noted that he only played 15 minutes and wasn't hurting us or bad...just not particularly good.
Lance Thomas - This was the first game of the three where I felt his production came in meaningful moments. The guy makes the right reads most of the time and has shot the ball pretty well from the floor. Where he was really valuable for the Knicks was playing defense. Dude can really guard 2/3's the players on the floor at any given time. He's smart and works hard, Fisher's given him the nod over Early and it doesn't look like Lance will be giving it up soon. So far he's benefited a bit from team's underplaying him on defense to focus elsewhere, but I don't see that changing which would mean he might get to eat this way. It's up to him to keep it up.
Fisher - His best job of the first three games no doubt. He trusted Galloway down the stretch which goes a long way and he trusted Lance more than I think I ever could. I think Grant was in there at the right times too. This was a tight game and I think both Melo and R-Lo got more minutes than their recent loads, but it was a necessary evil to get a very nice win. He won a close game with smart decision making.
Random Thoughts: Wall and Beal are really devastating tandem. Containing them is all you can do at this point. Otto Porter is a guy I expected to step up this season, but last night I wasn't particularly impressed.
