Q-Tip’s production on the 1st 3 Tribe albums or Prince Paul’s production on De La’s 1st 3 albums?

I fukking love the first three De La albums, like adore them shyts from when I was a kid till today. Prince Paul is a genius, and low-key that's De La Soul to me - everything after is....ok.

....but still Tip. Prince Paul made three legendary albums. But Tip and those Tribe albums transcend to another plane of existence that De La came close to, but never reached.

This is exactly how I feel.

Tribe's sh*t was just too next level.

Q-Tip and it's not even close.

I like Prince Paul but I think he's a little overrated as a producer. Still one of the best but people act like his shyt was RZA, Dr. Dre, Premier, Pete Rock, etc level of beat making. I get that his style of sampling is what made him influential in particular, but eh, I still feel like his beats are just okay but not “out of this world”.

My favorite De La Soul album is between Buhloone Mindstate and Stakes Is High. I give the slight edge to Stakes Is High, and surprisingly, that's the one without Paul behind the boards.

I could be wrong, but I think the height of Prince Paul's involvement was the first album. After that, De La (specifically Posdunos) was doing co-production and Paul was more of a facilitator because he wanted the group to be able to do it without him. It wasn't like Q-Tip where he made all the beats himself and acted as the leader.

I listen to A Tribe Called Quest more but talking strictly about production, Prince Paul's work on the first three De La Soul albums is incredible, some of the best uses of sampling ever.
