Man shot dead on Queens street, fifth NYC homicide in 24 hours
Adding to an alarming homicide spree, a man was fatally shot on a Queens street Wednesday — the fifth person slain in the city in 24 hours, officials said.
Police were called to Grassmere Terrace and Regina Ave. in Far Rockaway about 1:30 p.m. and found the 34-year-old victim sprawled on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and body.
Medics rushed him to Jamaica Hospital but he could not be saved. His name was not immediately released.
One neighbor said he heard three gunshots, but didn’t witness the slaying.
Usually stuff like that doesn’t really happen around here," said the neighbor, who didn’t give his name. "With everything going on right now, you’d think people would have some more compassion, but apparently not.”
The violence adds to a startling 24-hour homicide toll: It was the fifth slaying in the city since 4 p.m. Tuesday, when Vincent Witt, 20, was shot in the head on Park Hill Ave. in Staten Island, officials said.
No arrests have been made in any of the killings, officials said.
