Well , NYC Bloods (UBN) Originated in 1993 in rikers with OG Mac because blacks we're getting that pressure from the latin kings so Mac organized that and gradually became a force in the prisons and it didn't spill out into the streets until probably like 95/96 ish
Now for my generation (90s babies) we still banged rags ,but we started diverting more towards homegrown gangs YGz , YBz & OY which peaked in the late 00s / early 10s , but that really just consisted of young teens / high schoolers ... it's still some what present but it not as heavy & hectic as it was during that era .

its just street/building crews of kids and childhood friends. not super organized. when they hit jail they usually get absorbed in one of the "bigger" gangs. the media or the cops generally give them the names u see. the ny post or the daily news had like a map with all the gang names recently. some of the names were od funny. shyt like APEZ ON DECK and stuff. just a hunch but Id guess the ppl out there getting real money aren't with the gang shyt. if you're with that gang shyt and you're over 21 and actually outdoors chances are you're a bum

there are so many different sects since the mid 80's. the more notorious ones are still popping but the neighborhood gangs are either smaller now or brand new heads using a name that owned that area.
every area of the 5 boroughs got neighborhood sects
but most stop doing that shyt because they get lokked up, die or grow up.

In an ar-ab interview he talks about being surprised at all the gangs in PA prisons, since they are pretty much non-existent in philly

Gangs in NY is nothing new
Gangs been around since the 60's/70's breh. Check out the movies "Warriors". Every borough had gangs that kind of mellowed out in the very early 80's when crack took over, most gang members became drug dealers that had crews aka gangs. Everything picked back up in the late 80's with the Decepticons, Lo Lifes, the A Team and smaller level gangs such as the 40 Thieves. Also most projects formed the own project gangs. Latin Kings and Netas never died down at all.

It was fun in Elementary school and JR high school. Everybody wanted to rock a flag. It gave you popularity and girls. You add in rap music which is dominate in the hood, and that's it

I guess it's because philly is a smaller city and not as densely populated
A lot of areas in Harlem and the Bronx are mostly tenaments and housing projects
You got a bunch of poor teenagers living on top of each other like that and fighting over drug territory among other things
It's only natural that they clique up
I doubt dudes are gang banging just for the sake of gang banging
And if they are they're probably not to be taken serious
