Question to NY'ers.. Do artists like Rocky, Desiigner & Bobby represent current NY?

Bobby/Rowdy/GS9 represent the vast majority of NYC heads under the age of I would say 25. The look and aesthetic especially is what represents most of how young NYC dress. NYC kids in their 20's still have a distinct style and pay attention to small details just like previous gen's (like a grey underbrim vs. black brim, how your timbs are rocked, expensive coats,). GS9 epitomized young NYC ALOT more than A$AP, Pro Era, Dave East, and Bronson, at best A$AP comes in a very distant second if we are talking about true representation.

Dave East represents Uptown style/aesthetic very well ( Uptown in this context being East Harlem, South Bronx,Dyckman/The Heights) specifically those in the age range 26-30 range. His style for better or for worse is heavily influenced by early 2000's Philly/NYC mixtape flows, and he struggles to get out of that box. That is why older NYC heads from that era have so much love for East, no one has gotten as much love from that era as East has.

Pro Era is straight up forced and manufactured imo, that is not to say there aren't early 20 year olds who are into boom bap era sound but to the extent that they are, ?! Na waaaay to suspect for me.

French and Fab represent the flashy drug dealer, a continuation of Cam's lane from a decade ago.

Even with the southern and drill influence, you are still going to see cats under the age of 25 still spitting with that Philly/Mixtape style if you do a quick search of young NYC MC's on youtube. Sadly as a result of that era's de-emphasis on song construction/mastering of chorus creation, these kids still can't mold their style into something that can be sold outside the Tri-state.

Pro Era represents the rebellious smart artsy kids from the hood who are semi into hip hop, the kids who skateboard, watch anime and love 90's fashion.

The 1999 mixtape by Joey was hot when it dropped not in a street sense like GS9 but I even heard goons around my way talking about him saying he was nice.

You was spot on with East and his aesthetic...

Kind of off-topic, but how accurately do Money & Violence, Respect Life, and all of their knock-offs depict the current NY? From the outside looking in, it seems like all those DIY web series have more NY street flair than most of the up-and-coming rappers in 2016.

Yeah I know these types, my lil cousins are these types. They have even done tracks with Pro Era and Perrion, but my lil cousins are still obviously of this generation and don't come off as forced. The Underachievers are more accurately representative of the "smartsy artsy" hood kids imo.

You have to remember these series are produced by cats in their mid to late 30s and also star cats in that age bracket. The average cat hustling is younger than the dudes you see in these shows, so based on the age variable there will be some things that are slightly off based on that alone.
