i don't think marlo was in his feelings, he was impressed that michael stood up to him without being disrespectful or scared especially when michael turned down monk and didn't expect to deal with him. it might have even been a recruiting test to find out who's fearless, and mike passed by looking a killer in the eye and not backing down.

By rejecting the money Michael placed his value higher than the other kids he ran with and Marlos crew took note of that.

I don't think Marlo was "in his feelings", whenever Marlo was even mildly upset about something he deployed the shooters.

Yup. It was a little more than him being impressed with Michael's heart. A kid refusing to take his money is a challenge to his status just like the security guard who challenged him

Later on Chris approaches Michael giving him props. "You're out here taking care of business, not begging on any handouts." I'm slightly misquoting but yeah, Marlo was testing the younger kids on the block to see who had heart and street sense to be an effective soldier. He approached Michael to see if he'd fold, and when Michael stood tall on the bait he immediately signals to Chris indicating they have a potential soldier.
