Questloveโ€™s Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) won the Oscar for Best Original Documentary at the 94th Academy Awards. His directorial debut won over Attica, Flee, and Writing With Fire. He shares the award with producers Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent, David Dinerstein.

โ€œThis is such a stunning moment for me right now, but itโ€™s not about me,โ€ Questlove said. โ€œItโ€™s about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain. Just know that in 2022, this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem.โ€ He took a pause, saying he was overwhelmed by the moment. Watch the speech below.

The award was presented to Questlove by Chris Rock, who had just been struck by Will Smith following a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith

Summer of Soul won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award when it premiered at Sundance last February, and more recently won Best Documentary at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards. Itโ€™s also up for Best Music Film at this yearโ€™s Grammys. Questlove currently has another documentary underway about Sly Stone, and will be a co-producer alongside Mick Jagger on a forthcoming documentary series about James Brown for A&E
