R&B heads, how do ya'll feel about these new school, atmospheric female R&B artists?

I'm talking about stuff like this

Jhene

Sza

Tinashe

Rochelle Jordan

The main criticism I've seen is that a lot of them don't have strong voices(aside from Tinashe), are biting Aaliyah and the music gets repetitive. This is true in a lot of cases though I'm still a big fan of Sza and Tinashe.

What's the coli's take? Would ya'll like to see mainstream R&B go in this direction or do you think its bad for the genre?

jhene is terrible. her voice is trash, her songwriting is trash, her production is lackluster. she's a bootleg cassie

sza is good, kinda boring at times. Z has some really dope songs

tinashe is really good but she needs to make more soulful music. a lot of her stuff is dope but it lacks a certain something. she could either be a star or mya status

rojo is my fav out of the 4, her music is extremely sensual and captures the ethereal vibe perfectly.

I have no problem with atmospheric r&b as long as it's soulful.

Jhene claims people say she sounds like a young Sade.
She said that dumb shyt :dahell:

Edit:

Interview: Jhené Aiko | The FADER

So how would you describe the sound you’ve put together? A lot of people compare it to a younger Sade with urban stories. I always say, “Keep it pretty but I want you to be able to ride around to it in your car” and have respect for 808s and something that makes a beat. As far as the lyrics go, they’re super honest and on this album you’ll see me doing different things with my voice. It’s not so rap-influenced. It’s just me being a singer and doing the different things I can do.

Was Sade important to you, growing up? You remember her voice and melodies and her mysterious look. I didn’t really realize I was a big fan of hers until I started doing my mixtape and, when I was trying to find the beats and groove I wanted to be in, I was like, “This reminds me of Sade.” It made me want to go back and listen to her and really see that’s the type of artist I want to be. Not as much in copying her look or sound, but her music is timeless. You can hear any of her songs and you don’t feel like it takes you back, even if it gives you a good nostalgic feeling. You just want to listen to those songs forever.

I wouldn't say Jhene is complete trash, but she's definitely overrated because of her looks and she has an extremely weak voice

Sza has a lot of potential, though sometimes I think she's too experimental for her own good

I think Tinashe is the most talented out of the up and comers. but yeah, you can tell she's still trying to find her identity as an artist. I still think Slow and Who Am I Working For are her best joints, they have the experimental, new age R&B vibe but she's also showing off a strong voice, instead of using weak, airy vocals. I'm really not feeling that new joint she has with Schoolboy, sounds way too much like everybody else

Rochelle is a good songwriter but, idk, her music doesn't really do much for me. kinda bland and way too similar to Aaliyah imo

Glad to see Rochelle getting her shine. Love her music. Go check out her album "Pressure". It was great. Looking forward to seeing what she will do next.

Joint dropped at the perfect time for me. "Somebody", "You Ain't My Man", "Could've Been", "Too Long", and Visions are my shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Haven't heard much of SZA, but Teen Spirit captivated me heavily and I look forward to listening to "Z". I also find her to be extremely good looking.

Haven't heard a single Jhene song, but I have her EP and Mixtape on my computer due to recommendation.

Where would I start to check out Tinashe's music?

Random kinda since it has no female vocals, but I have a feeling some of yall might dig this song.
