That's easy. The pertinent question here is why would a young breh be startled? Why, after decades and decades of clear and present racism, do young black people well into young adulthood keep getting shocked with these wake up calls?
Why do black parents keep failing their kids to the point where they grow up with no self awareness?
If a kid grows up in a good household, middle class/upper middle class etc., his parents can tell him about danger....but there's no way to know how Junior will respond until shyt pops off.
The Martin/Z story always tripped me out because I was able to remove the actors and apply it to different people.
For instance - let's say Trayvon Martin was Trisha McCaskill, a white 17 year old girl who just happened to do a little judo and tae kwon do growing up. Let's say that Zimmerman was the same person. Now....he's following a little white cheerleader chick around and she gets nervous and confronts him. She uses her training and almost gets him in a rear naked choke before he pulls out the strap and kills her.
Does anyone think Zimmerman gets off? White people defending him against Trayvon would have been using every Mexi-Jew slur they could think of. He would be seen as a predator.
That's the part that's difficult to teach kids. America's reaction wasn't based on the circumstances but rather "who" was involved. Court system as well. You have to explain to kids that they have to stand up for themselves....BUT THEN.....also tell them there are times when you have to deal with a certain amount of bullshyt just to get out of a situation alive. A kid with a natural "flight" response will avoid trouble...but the kid that's naturally wired to "fight" has to reject their own natural instincts in a high leverage situation. That's a lot for Black parents to have to handle.
