Like dude said above... 97 was a misdirected time in hip hop. Labels didn't know what they were doing half the time, and artists followed suit. Hardcore warm-up single for the mixtapes and college radio... then the obligatory club joint with an 80s sample, shakers + triangles on the beat, R&B singer for the hook. Rinse and repeat.

I copped Billy Lawrence's album back then too. She was dope.
